On April 7th, 2022, we organized a workshop with a representative of the Living Rent tenants’ union, which has been organizing tenants in Scotland since 2016. Today, the union has 2,300 organized members who have the power to fight for decent housing. The organisation’s “core business” is to defend members against the violation of the right to an adequate home, which they do through community building and collective addressing of housing problems. At the same time, the union is pressuring the state to change the rental legislation and guarantee everyone the right to a suitable home.

Emma Saunders from Living Rent introduced us to the work of tenants’ unions, and above all provided us with information for organizing tenants in our cities. During the workshop we worked in groups identifying key barriers for organizing and issues around which we could build a tenants’ community.

We identified some of the key problems we face as renters:

– too high rents

– short-term contracts or non-existent contracts

– poor quality of housing

– frequent violations by landlords (eg unannounced entry into an apartment)

– lack of supervisory authorities to which tenants would report violations

– absence of state

All this shows that:

– the situation on the rental market is very bad

– landlords have too much power and their behavior is not controlled by anyone

– the state does not perform its task of market regulation

– tenants are left to their own devices.

O projektu
